Sunday’s perfect weather almost produced the perfect result for the Bulls on Sunday in Surat, winning two of the 3 fixture matches played and going down in a nail-biter in the Reserve grade.
The well-drilled Under 16’s line-up were always going to be a hard task for the under-represented Maggies and dominated from the outset scoring early in the game and going on with the task until the final whistle. To their credit the young Maggies fought hard for the full 60mins ensuring the young Bulls had to work for their points, but with the glut of possession and some smart execution in attack, Redbulls ran out convincing winners 48-10.
The game of the day saw a very strong Maggies Reserve grade squad dominate early in a very physical affair with both sides sustaining game ending injuries to a number of their troops. Mitchell had a stranglehold at half time and looked to be the firm favourites going into the second half, but the Redbulls bounced back strongly, targeting the tiring Magpie forwards and making it anyone’s game with 10 minutes to go. Some great defence from the Maggies saw them hold on to a slender 2 point lead to take the match 32-30 at the hooter.
The A-Grade game started in a similar fashion to the Reserve grade with some big hits being the order of the day from both sides. Redbulls were able to put on a few quick tries after the 5 minute mark in a niggling game which saw Referee Kennedy’s patience wearing thin prior to the break where he sent Floyd Daniel for a 10 minute blow just before the half-time siren. The second half saw a much more disciplined attitude from the Bulls and the points came as a result. With a number of Maggies Reggies having to back up, it proved all too much at the end of the days play and the Bulls ran out convincing winners 34-14.
Special mentions to Betty and Kel and the Surat girls for their work during the week in ensuring all supporters were well accommodated and for the ever reliable Saint/Sporty for looking after the gates and doubles.
Unfortunately this week’s Café 54 Kick for Cash did not go off after two tickets were drawn on the day, so will jackpot to our next home game in Surat.
